Our Story

Makoko Pearls is dedicated to bringing positive change to the informal waterfront settlement of Makoko in Lagos, Nigeria. It was set up to give readers — and the world at large — a safe way to financially support the inhabitants of the inspiring community, where WATER BABY is predominantly set.

Established in the 19th century, Makoko faces numerous challenges, including rapid population growth, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of basic amenities such as electricity, schools, and healthcare clinics. The unique complexities faced by the community, such as its location and being absent from official maps, make the work of Makoko Pearls even more vital.

Our clear objectives include advancing education by providing financial aid, learning materials, and support to local schools. The focus is on ensuring that all children, regardless of their socioeconomic background, have access to quality education. By doing so, Makoko Pearls strives to empower the community through knowledge and skill development.

Working closely with the community and alongside local organisations, we are committed to the relief of poverty in Makoko through sustainable development projects and the provision of basic needs, as well as facilitating access to opportunities and resources that will empower residents to improve their living conditions. We plan to address health-related challenges and to support local healthcare projections such as access to clean water and sanitation.

Furthermore, we aim to enhance the capacity and skills of Makoko's socially and economically disadvantaged members. This empowerment strategy is designed to enable the community to identify and meet their needs independently, fostering greater participation in society.
